WHO releases material for World Hepatitis Day (28 July 2016): ‘Know Hepatitis, Act Now’

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released campaign material for World Hepatitis Day: 28th July 2016. This year the theme is “Know Hepatitis, Act Now”.

Background information:

Viral hepatitis is caused by one of several hepatitis viruses: Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Hepatitis D, Hepatitis E.

Hepatitis viruses cause infection and inflammation of the liver.

Hepatitis B and C can cause severe disease and even death.

They are transmitted through:

  • Unsafe sex
  • Unsafe injections and medical procedures
  • Transmission from mother to child
  • Injecting drug use

Key Messages:

Viral hepatitis affects 400 million people globally.

Every year, 6-10 million new people get infected with Hepatitis.

95% of people with hepatitis do not know that they are infected.

Only 1 in 100 persons with the disease is being treated for it.

  1. I will urge WHO representatives to publish similar articles for other communicable and noncommunicable diseases for the benefit of public health.
